The private island resort of Jumby Bay can only be reached by yacht once you’ve touched down in Antigua – a tantalising taste of what’s to come. Set on 300 acres in its own private island paradise, this all-inclusive resort – recently taken over by the prestigious Oetker Collection hotel brand – is a retreat and sanctuary all its own, with Forbes-award-winning facilities. Spend days on private yachts that take you to your own personal beach, glass of Taittinger Champagne in hand, before botanical oil massages in beachfront pavilions – or perhaps rum tasting and beach barbecues are more your scene. Rest assured, there’s plenty of time to relax among the infinity pools and hammocks sprinkled around the island – or even in your own plunge pool. It’s all finished off nicely with refined oceanfront dining and beach-bar cocktails – and, with all-inclusive the only option, you don't need to lift a finger.

In more detail

Suites and private villas, recently refurbished to immaculate standard, are sprinkled all over the island, allowing for ultimate privacy – though each is only steps from the white-powder beach. Expect serene tones of blue and white among sprawling wood-clad ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outside in. Most impressive of all are the Estate Suites, with their own private decking, pool and open-air dining area, though all suites feel luxe with their outdoor garden bathrooms that offer soaking tubs and rainforest showers. For true privacy, you can even opt for a multi-bedroom villa, with a large private pool, fully-equipped kitchen, your own golf cart and housekeeping services.

The open-air Veranda restaurant serves up fresh breads and pastries at breakfast, gnocchi and rustic tagliatelle at lunch and and fresh seafood and meat come dinner, with ingredients plucked from Jumby Bay's very own farm. For something more refined, The Estate House offers one of the Caribbean's best fine-dining restaurants, or head to 1830 bar for the ultimate in colonial elegance within the old plantation house. Back on the beach, thatched-roofed Genny's Bar and a pop-up tequila bar provide the ultimate spot for a nightcap, while throughout the week guests can also expect included beach barbecues, wine tasting evenings, cooking classes and rum tasting.

The palm-fringed arc of the island's beaches are sprinkled with thatched cabanas, hammocks and sun chairs for whiling beach days, while the north side of the island offers more rugged, wild shores, perfect for marine and bird life spotting and even private picnics. That’s alongside three pools – we particularly like the beachfront infinity offering – and one of the best spas in Antigua. Expect treatments like organic herb massages with botanical oils and thermal baths using natural ingredients from the island like coconut, aloe and lemongrass, taken in ocean-view treatment pavilions. For the ultimate indulgence, you and a loved one can sail aboard a private yacht to a private white-sand beach, enjoying a made-to-order picnic, Champagne and couples massage.

It's impossible to run out of things to do here, with the island's 300 acres also home to a 24-hour gym, tennis courts, and a yoga and meditation pavilion alongside a huge array of watersports – think special snorkelling expeditions and kayak tours. To top it all off, there's a fabulous kids and teens club.
