Eastern & Oriental Express
The handsome green and gold carriages of the Eastern & Oriental Express gleam as they glide past the coastlines, rice fields and jungles of Southeast Asia. Its polished wood-panelling and silk furnishings evoke the magic of a golden era of travel, for journeys of extravagant vintage excess. Every moment on board is special and timeless; like its sister the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, this train is truly an icon of the rails.
Since its inaugural journey from Bangkok to Singapore in 1993, the Eastern & Oriental Express has captured the hearts and minds of its guests with enchanting moments on the tracks. The original Silver Star train carriages have been extensively remodelled in a colonial style, recalling the spirit of Indochina with cherry wood carpentry and gleaming brass finishes. With an open-air Observation Car to make the most of the ultra-scenic routes, the Eastern & Oriental Express is perfectly designed to echo its Far East surroundings.
Excursions from the train include everything from gentle hikes to panoramic viewpoints to cooking classes on a floating river barge. Explore remote villages, meet locals and immerse yourself in Eastern culture – there’s a wealth of unique experiences at your fingertips. Whether strolling through a lush rice paddy or touring a golden mosque, you’ll collect lasting memories of far-off places.
Your experience onboard is intimately connected with the world outside the train – everything from the dining to the décor is inspired by the region. Internationally renowned chefs curate a menu of world cuisine, served in the elegant restaurant car with fine china and sparkling crystal. And, from the bar, except signature cocktails as exotic as the destination, as well as wines and Champagne to toast your journey.
During the day, relax in the saloon car with a good book, or challenge your fellow passengers to a board game. Wander down to the open-air Observation Car to get up close to the jungled interiors and coastlines of the Malaysian Peninsula. And, come evening, the Piano Bar is the ideal spot for a nightcap with the sound of jazz in the air. When paired with included tours of the highlights at each stop, you’re guaranteed a journey to remember.
For those travelling as a couple, the standard Pullman Cabins offer plush seating by day and upper and lower berths cosy with crisp linens by night. Enjoy luxury toiletries in your en-suite as well as attentive 24-hour service, including the transformation of your lounge area to sleeping quarters in the evening.
The State Cabins offer more space, with large windows and a comfortable seating area that transforms into two floor level single beds at night. For those who prefer not to sleep in split-level berths, these luxurious cabins are the ideal alternative, with 24-hour service and en-suite facilities included as standard.
The most luxurious of all the cabins on the Eastern & Oriental Express, the Presidential Cabin offers supreme space and additional touches to enhance your experience. You’ll have the option to select your own music, setting your desired ambience as the scenery whips past your windows. Recline in the plush seating area – with a drink from the complimentary minibar – which will convert into spacious beds when it’s time to rest. There’s plenty of room and even additional seating to make the most of your time onboard.
