Other close-by adventures include bird watching, mountain biking, cultural visits and trips out to see the region’s endemic golden monkeys and the lava flows just outside Ruhengeri town.
Back at base, however, it’s all about relaxation – stone cottages and suites come with open fires, large sitting rooms and private verandahs overlooking the national park. Ultra-stylish en-suite bathrooms are a delight, while polished floors and terracotta tiled roofs complete the rustic aesthetic.
And, to round things off, and at the end of thrilling days in the jungle, delicious and hearty meals are served either in the cosy dining room or outside on the deck, accompanied by more of those sweeping national-park views.
