Staying at the legendary Hassler Roma, perched atop the Spanish Steps immortalised in Wyler’s celebrated film, you’ll enjoy one of the most enviable views in Rome as well as Michelin-starred dining and a pampering spa. Discover the city’s highlights on a private guided tour, from the Colosseum and Roman Forum to the Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican, then round off your adventure with a day in Tivoli, where emperors, nobles and wealthy Romans have long slipped away for pleasure and relaxation.

Day 1

Your Roman Holiday begins

On arrival in Rome, you’ll be met by a private driver and transferred to your city centre hotel. Perched atop the Spanish Steps with breathtaking views of the historic centre, Hassler Roma is an icon of the Eternal City. Often called ‘the Grand Dame of Rome’, this legendary hotel once welcomed the stars of Roman Holiday – and still feels every inch a movie set for your own Roman escape.

After settling into your room, wander out to explore, perhaps strolling down the monumental stairway or around the Villa Borghese gardens. Alternatively, indulge in post-journey pampering in the spa before a Michelin-starred meal at Imago. Speak to our experts if you’d like us to arrange a Rome at Night tour.

Day 2

Rome! By all means Rome!

After breakfast, set out on a private half-day tour that showcases Rome at its most cinematic. Accompanied by your driver-guide, discover layer upon layer of history – and beauty at every turn. Take in the enduring relics of the Roman Empire at the Colosseum, Arch of Constantine, and Circus Maximus, then pause at Capitoline Hill for sweeping views over the Roman Forum. Admire the neoclassical lines of Palazzo delle Esposzioni and Piazza Venezia, and look towards the Vatican Holy See with a spectacular view of the Basilica of St Peter and its vast square.

The tour continues on foot, tracing the route from the Spanish Steps to Piazza Navone via the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. The rest of the day is yours to explore; if you wish, we can include a visit to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel.

Day 3

Tivoli and its villas

Today, leave the city behind on a private excursion to Tivoli, a veritable garden of delights on the outskirts of Rome, where emperors and nobles built country retreats purely for pleasure. With your guide, wander through Hadrian’s Villa, exploring atmospheric remains of baths, libraries and temples that once formed an emperor’s countryside escape. Continue to Villa d’Este, a 16th-century palace famed for its Renaissance gardens, ornate terraces and lavish water features.

There’ll be time to stroll the historic streets of Tivoli and stop for lunch in a local restaurant, or continue to the least-known of Tivoli’s villas, Villa Gregoriana – a dramatic nature park laced with archaeological remains and waterfalls.

Day 4

The end of the fairy tale

About the itinerary

"Following in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn, this short break to Rome includes a stay at the celebrated Hotel Hassler Roma, the hotel which served as Hepburn's cosseting base during the filming of the 1953 classic, Roman Holiday. Packed with intrigue, history and plenty of luxury, this has to be my favourite way to take in the sights and sounds of Italy's Eternal City. Pure perfection."
