Xugana Island Lodge is situated on a wooded island in the heart of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, offering a remote safari retreat surrounded by permanent water. It’s accessible only by light aircraft and boat, creating a profound sense of seclusion within this unique, richly biodiverse ecosystem. Set beneath a canopy of ebony and African mangosteen trees, the lodge overlooks the Xugana Lagoon, where guests can observe wildlife directly from the main deck. The experience here focuses on the watery landscape of the Okavango Delta, offering a distinct alternative to traditional land-based safaris.

In more detail

The accommodation consists of just 12 thatched lagoon-facing suites, constructed from local materials and designed to blend with the natural surroundings. Each one features en-suite facilities, a private deck with views over the water, and nature-inspired furnishings.

The central area includes a lounge, bar, and dining area, along with a swimming pool situated on the edge of the lagoon where guests can relax between safaris. Dining focuses on traditional Botswanan cuisine, often served al fresco under the stars. There’s also the option of sunset dinners served on a private floating pontoon. Afternoon is served daily, with biltong, scones and local treats, while sundowners are served with panoramic views and the possibility of spotting wildlife from the observation deck.

Activities here focus on exploring the Delta's tranquil channels in traditional mokoro (dugout canoes) or motor boats to view a rich array of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, buffalo, lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, giraffes and plenty more. Guided walking safaris on nearby islands are also available, providing opportunities to track larger game on foot, while there are also opportunities to go fishing among the surrounding waterways. The area is also a birdwatching haven, home to over 400 species, including the likes of African jacanas and kingfishers.
