Moving beyond the historic grandeur of the lobby, rooms are decidedly modern, with fresh whitewash offset by bright splashes of colour. All come with the likes of bathtubs, coffee kits and complimentary WiFi, while suites add in living areas and some extra space. However, for the ultimate, look to the Senior Suites. Housed in an original vaulted cloister, they're a delight of wrought chandeliers, richly patterned carpets and impressive artwork.
The restaurant is equally considered, with imposing volcanic brickwork, iron filigree and dark-wood panelling. And, although it evokes all the charm of yesteryear, menus offer a more contemporary feel, mixing in international influences with traditional Arequipan flavours. What’s more, the bar is particularly evocative, with its cathedral ceiling blessed with painted frescoes.
You’ll also be just a short walk from the city’s Plaza de Armas – the historic square dotted with palm trees and colonial icons. If you look beyond the city limits, however, you’ll be treated to a natural world of pre-Incan terraces, condor canyons and mighty volcanoes. Then, on return, you’ll be able to rest up with the hotel’s spa. Expect massage treatments, sauna soaks and a whirlpool tub.
