In more detail

With cutting edge architecture and strong eco-credentials, this is the only luxury property of its kind in the area, spoiling its guests with spacious rooms decked out with comforts such as a pillow menu, high thread count bed linens and natural wool mattress underlays. Tucked away in native bush, the hotel is in Franz Josef, home to countless natural wonders to discover in the South West World Heritage Area, including mountains, glaciers, lakes and shores, all teeming with flora and fauna. You’ll wake each morning to the melodic strains of the native birds, and be treated to spectacular views from your private balcony of majestic mountains rising out of the canopy. Speaking of which, the aptly named Canopy Restaurant is open daily serving international buffet breakfasts and impressive evening meals, including the five course degustation menu showcasing seasonal local produce cooked to exacting standards using the latest techniques. You can enjoy your food alfresco under the covered balcony, or take in the forest views from inside by the cosy fire. There’s also an outdoor pizza oven and a cosy lounge, perfect for lazy lunches and evening drinks. For the ultimate in pampering, the hotel has a full-service spa, a rare delight among New Zealand hotels. Outside of the hotel there are lots of outdoor adventures to be had, from rafting and kayaking on the lakes, to horse rides and quad tours around the bush, or take to the skies in a helicopter safari. Once done, the Glacier Hot Pools located adjacent to the hotel are the perfect way to warm up and unwind.
