Sea breezes are almost the only action at Rampart Street, a private villa turned elegant hotel. It’s at the heart of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not much happens here. There are splendid sea views, a cricket pitch. Some narrow lanes, a decided colonial atmosphere, a relaxed tropical vibe. Very few hotels have been allowed permission to be in this architectural grandeur, and of those, 25 Rampart Street is one of the only ones with a pool. It’s a lovely pool too, surrounded by trees thronging with bird song.
There are just four rooms to choose from – staying here is akin to a private visit to the grandest of country homes. It was once an English merchant house and still holds on to that heady history, while providing every modern comfort, from Wi-Fi to en suite spa baths with views of the Indian Ocean. All are delectably appointed, with vast beds draped in fine netting and local materials, antiques and art adding flavour and finesse.
It’s easy to explore from here – whale watching, leopard spotting, inspiring moments in notable Buddhist temples, all the delights of tropical beaches are within easy reach. On return, there’s a dining room that is a destination in its own right, with a skilful chef turning his hand to Sri Lankan and international classics with a deft and delicious ease.
