Tailor-made holidays to Costa Rica

Costa Rica, sandwiched between Nicaragua in the north and Panama to its south, is a tropical paradise renowned for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant and friendly culture and commitment to sustainable tourism. This small Central American country offers a blend of adventure, relaxation and eco-tourism unique not only to the region but also, arguably, to the world. Undeniably one of Central America's jewels, Costa Rica is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including lush rainforests, pristine secluded beaches, towering volcanoes, thick cloud forests and crystal-clear lakes and rivers – it is simply breathtaking. Add in plenty of characterful lodges and hotels, plus a wide range of thrilling activities available throughout the country, including hiking, zip-lining, white-water rafting and wildlife spotting, and Costa Rica is a ready-made destination for a luxury holiday.

Away from the undeniable allure of its wildlife and nature, the Costa Rican culture is a vibrant blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial influence and African heritage. At the heart of this culture is the common attitude of "pura vida" (pure life), a way of life Costa Ricans embrace which ensures they are happy, laid back and slow-paced. Music, too, plays a significant role in Costa Rican culture, with various genres such as salsa, merengue, and calypso popular among locals and visitors alike. Much of this can be attributed to its unique history. The country's history is marked by its position as a peaceful nation in a region often plagued by conflict. Gaining independence from Spain in 1821 and subsequently abolishing its army, focus instead turned to education and social development. This peaceful approach has contributed to Costa Rica's blossoming democracy, strong emphasis on sustainability and, of course, thriving tourism.

Special experiences in Costa Rica

For its size, Costa Rica packs in a vast array of special experiences. Visit the Central Highlands, north of San José, and you'll find yourself in the country’s active geothermal zone. Here, you can zip-line through the rainforest, soaring above lush canopies and vibrant flora and fauna for a true bird’s-eye view of the jungle.

In the Monteverde Cloud Forest, an elevated treetop walkway lets you stroll through the canopy. Nearby, Arenal Volcano rises within its national park, famed for dramatic eruptions and lava shows. Luxury hotels here offer perfectly framed rainforest views, with incredible wildlife on your doorstep – from colourful toucans and tree frogs to howler monkeys and the rare quetzal.

Then there’s the Osa Peninsula, often described as ‘the most biologically intense place on Earth’, where golden beaches and dense forests line the Pacific coast. Spot sloths, spider monkeys, whales, tapirs and hundreds of bird species – even the occasional jaguar. In Tortuguero National Park, witness sea turtles nesting and hatchlings emerging, an unforgettable experience for nature lovers.

On the Caribbean coast, a different rhythm awaits. Head to laid-back Puerto Viejo and remote Manzanillo, where reggae beats and easy-going Caribbean vibes define the atmosphere. Here, palm-fringed beaches meet lush jungle, with wildlife all around – from sloths to vibrant birds. Spend your days exploring the coastline, snorkelling, or simply unwinding.

For adventure, raft the Pacuare River’s Class III and IV rapids through rainforest scenery. Afterwards, relax on Costa Rica’s beautiful beaches, soaking up the sun, surf and laid-back spirit the country is known for.

Where to stay in Costa Rica

In the vibrant capital of San José, experience the warmth and comfort of a private home in a converted tropical Victorian mansion on a quiet spot approximately five minutes drive from downtown San Jose. Beyond the city, immerse yourself in the country's lush interior at Amor Arenal, on the foothills of Arenal Volcano, with views of the volcano and the San Carlos Valley. Beach lovers can opt for the stylish Arenas del Mar hotel close to the Manuel Antonio National Park, with rooms & suites surrounded by tropical forests and the chance for a balcony with a Jacuzzi. Or, for those looking for a more tranquil stay, adults-only Kura Boutique Hotel or Monteverde's family-owned Ocotea Boutique Hotel are great options.

When to go to Costa Rica

The best time to visit Costa Rica depends on your intentions. If you prefer sunny, dry weather – ideal for beach activities, wildlife spotting and hiking – the dry season from December to April is the best choice, although this does mean more crowded attractions.

If you don’t mind occasional afternoon showers and prefer fewer crowds, lush landscapes and the chance to see sea turtles nesting, the green season from May to November is a great option. Rainfall can be heavier during this period, especially in September and October, which may affect outdoor plans. However, these months are actually the best time to visit the Caribbean coast, where places such as Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo enjoy some of their sunniest conditions. A secondary drier window along the Caribbean typically falls between late February and April.

December to April is also the best time for humpback whale sightings. Wherever and whenever you travel, packing for rain is advisable given Costa Rica’s tropical climate, where weather patterns can vary significantly by region.
