Day 2

Discover Porto's baroque architecture & riverside charm

After breakfast, you'll embark on a private walking tour led by a local expert to discover the soul of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Porto, celebrated for its riverside beauty, medieval charm, and as the birthplace of Port wine. Your tour begins at the iconic São Bento Railway Station, where 20,000 hand-painted tiles depict the city’s rich past in striking blue and white. Continue along elegant Rua das Flores, a lively showcase of Porto’s timeless character. The tour continues through some of the city’s main sights, admire the baroque splendour of São Nicolau and São Francisco de Assis, then head to the magnificent Palácio da Bolsa—an architectural jewel that tells the story of Porto’s mercantile glory. Stroll through the atmospheric Ribeira district, lined with riverfront cafés and traditional rabelo boats, as the Douro shimmers beside you. Conclude your journey across one of Porto’s graceful bridges to Vila Nova de Gaia, home of Port wine, where an expert-led tasting awaits amid centuries of winemaking tradition.

In the evening ask us to secure a table for you at one of Porto’s acclaimed restaurants for a sumptuous dining experience; our favourites include the Vinum Restaurant in Grahams wine cellars, and the DOC Restaurant run by Michelin-starred chef Rui Paula.

Savour port wine tastings in the Douro Valley

This morning you'll venture beyond the city and into the heart of the Douro Valley. After breakfast, a private driver will collect you and whisk you through the lush, rolling countryside along one of Portugal’s most scenic national roads. Upon arrival, pause for a coffee and take in the sweeping views before boarding a traditional rabelo boat for a serene one-hour cruise along the Douro River. Your first stop is a prestigious 17th-century winery, where a four-course lunch awaits, expertly paired with wines from the estate’s own vineyards. Enjoy a guided tour and tasting, discovering how the Douro Valley earned its place as the world’s first demarcated wine region. Continue to a charming family-run winery to learn about their artisanal production of red, white, and aged Port wines, and savour a final tasting before returning to Porto.

In the evening, perhaps indulge in a sumptuous dinner at the exceptional 1638 Restaurant, where Michelin-starred Chef Nacho Manzano celebrates the rich flavours of Iberia. Complement your meal with a glass from Kopke’s finest selection and end the night with a signature Port cocktail, a perfect finale to your day in Portugal’s wine country.

About the itinerary

"This is the perfect itinerary for those wanting more out of their trip to Lisbon than a standard city-break. Enrich your visit to Portugal instead by journeying from Porto to Lisbon whilst seeing all that the country has to offer in between. I find the lazy village life and fine wine offered up by the countryside just as seductive as the bustle of the charming capital. "
