The hotel is built around the ruins of a 13th-century Dominican monastery and has original, medieval stonework at its heart, although it has a Baroque façade and a set of striking, and somewhat controversial, tinted gold-metallic windows that are much more modern in appearance.
The view from these windows of the riverscape below is the most striking feature of the bedrooms, while a window table in the hotel’s Icon Restaurant gives out onto glorious vistas of the Parliament and Chain Bridge, both illuminated beautifully at night, as you dine on authentic Hungarian flavours.
Step outside the hotel to experience the romance of old Buda by visiting the neo-Gothic Matthias Church or, once the majority of other visitors to the city have drifted away, by strolling the cobbled streets at sunset. Explore the pretty burghers’ houses and medieval alleys, or make the trip on foot or by taxi to the other bank of the river and discover the shops and bars of Pest.
