Expect timber-clad walls and scattered reindeer furs in log-cabin style rooms, while the designer lines of the Sky View Cabins go one up, with floor-to-ceiling windows, pared-back concrete walls and glossy black panelling in an aesthetic that's oh-so-Scandi. It's perhaps unsurprising to learn that this was once the Lapland residence of Finland’s longest serving president. And, as adults-only, you’ll be left to enjoy it all in uninterrupted peace.
Food is a true highlight at Javri Lodge. While menus are refined, the atmosphere is decidedly laid-back, with five-course dinners that are homemade and locally-sourced straight from the surrounding wilderness, from reindeer and Arctic char to local berries. It's all perfectly wine-matched from a world-class wine and champagne list. On request, gourmet lunches – if not taken back at the lodge – can be enjoyed in the frozen-forest wilds by an open fire.
By day, there's the chance to enjoy everything from gliding reindeer rides through the firs to cross-country skiing adventures, as well as more heart-racing escapades like husky sledding and snowmobile safaris. It’s all lit up in the most dramatic of ways by, with luck, those famed Northern Lights – you are 256km north of the Arctic Circle, after all. Then, when you're not exploring, dips in the heated indoor swimming pool and in one of the two saunas await. While winter sees this region at its most magical, summer trips are just as delightful, with long days under the midnight sun, berry and mushroom foraging and idyllic forest hikes.
