Set in the former French Governor’s Residence, the Sofitel Luang Prabang combines European sophistication with local heritage. Think colonial whitewash paired against traditional artwork. And, with just 25 rooms, it’s delightfully boutique, with each suite featuring its very own hot tub. It’s all set right among the town’s temples and colonial architecture, with the region’s waterfall wonders just a short distance away.

In more detail

The rooms are especially impressive. All are suites, featuring the likes of rainfall showers and their very own garden, complete with gazebo and hot tub. The Lao silk furnishings and four-poster beds round off the traditional aesthetic. It’s all inspired by the fine architecture and works of Lao artists throughout the centuries. What’s more, upgrades mix in villa living and private pools.

Along with the suites, a sense of space runs throughout the hotel. The dining is a special highlight, taken in a great open canvas tent. With a nod to the country’s erstwhile nobility, you can expect grand buffet grills, including the famous buffalo tasting platter. Alternatively, head to the Library for European favourites and patisserie delights, taken on armchairs by the fireplace.

Inspired? Book onto a cooking class to learn how to prepare the exotic local specialities. The spa, too, is informed by centuries of Lao tradition, with the massage treatments a particular favourite. You’ll just have to remember to find time to explore Luang Prabang’s UNESCO-listed spread of French architecture and traditional markets.
