If the idea of ‘tented’ accommodation is in any way off-putting, then let’s start by saying that tents here have more in common with most penthouse hotel suites than they do with what we used to peg out at the bottom of our gardens. Beneath their vast canvas roofs, the resort’s luxury tents offer fixed walls with glass doors that open onto private patios, handsome four-poster beds, elegant wooden furniture, tiger-print armchairs, silver tea sets and bathrooms complete with evergreen marble showers, silk bathrobes and claw-footed bathtubs.
The public spaces, including the impressive library bar, are in a central building decorated in the style of a royal hunting lodge. Relaxing here, surrounded by murals depicting the local wildlife, it’s hard to believe you’re on the edge of a national park. But Ranthambore is just a ten-minute drive away.
Tigers are the stars of the show here, and sightings are frequent within the park. Most guests go on two game drives a day, watching out for birds and pretty chital deer as well as tigers. A nearby fort makes for an excellent hike, while other possible activities include visiting semi-tame elephants, shopping for handicrafts in the local town or relaxing in the outdoor pool or at the spa.
