Bushmans Kloof is situated in the foothills of the stunning Cederberg Mountains, in a South African Natural Heritage site where the biodiversity is greater than that found in the Amazon. There are leopards to look for, mountain zebra graphic against the native bush, and 130 ancient Bushman rock art sites to marvel at.
The lodge itself is another sort of marvel, providing every luxury in the middle of wild nowhere. There are just 16 rooms and suites, in cottages or within the original Manor House, which dates back to 1843. Each is plush and soothing, with luxury bed linen and custom designed furnishings. Some have fireplaces, and all are indulgent.
Indulgence is a byword here – the spa was recently voted Best Luxury Wellness Spa in the country. There are also four pools to choose from, each set in glorious gardens. And the dining is extraordinary, with seasonal dishes often served al fresco, under stars or ancient fig trees.
