On the edge of the Mediterranean and in the heart of Maremma’s wild cowboy territory, this luxurious offering is jdeally sited in the small port town of Punta Ala, its rooms, suites and spa overlook a bay noted for its beauty, with views of Elba, and more distantly Corsica, adding to an already magnificent setting. Rooms here differ in décor but are all tastefully appointed and exceedingly comfortable. Some have gorgeous garden views, others open out onto balconies with seascapes stretching away. Striped wallpaper, wide beds, judiciously chosen prints and a light touch and airy ambience characterise each, and en suites are just as well thought out.
The La Vela Beach Club sits by a sea so blue it’s hard not to blink at the sight of it. Here, sun beds are lined up, Italian style, with wide parasols, and guests can try their hand at water sports such as sailing and water skiing between cold beers and freshly fired pizzas. The hotel’s main pool is a delight, with sweeping views of the nearby marina. And, if soaking up the seaside sun becomes too much, the staff will happily organise horse riding treks through the fragrant pine forests or tours of the nearby vineyards. As you’d expect of a Tuscan hotel, the food is fabulous, with fresh fish served in the Belvedere Restaurant, just above the swimming pool while the beachfront La Spiaggia is open fronted and dishes up views as tasty as the local specialities.
