In more detail

The Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita is the result of a meticulous restoration project, converting ancient Sassi cave dwellings into comfortable, modern accommodation right in the historic centre of Matera, in the midst of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The 18 rooms have been fitted with contemporary bathrooms, floor heating and cooling systems and super comfortable beds, while preserving the original aesthetic of the caves with their exposed stone walls, illuminated by soft, atmospheric lighting. On the outdoor terraces, you’ll be greeted by wonderful views looking out towards the spectacular Murgia National Park and its rock-hewn churches.

Start your morning with a delicious, typically Southern Italian breakfast served in a 13th-century cave church, featuring the likes of Matera bread, homemade cakes and pastries, fruit, yoghurt and ricotta and mozzarella cheeses. Exclusive, candle-lit dinners are also available on request.

In-room wellness treatments can be arranged, along with cooking classes, wine tastings, walking tours and other experiences designed to showcase the region’s rich history, culture and traditions.
