In more detail

Staying in your very own luxury treehouse, you’ll be treated to canopy-level views of the towering forest and its colourful wildlife. It’s best taken in on your private verandah, enjoying afternoon tea, sipping on a cool drink or simply lazing on the hammock. Those with a river overlook are particularly impressive. Back inside, your surprisingly large king-size bedroom is decked in polish timber and host to plush furnishings and vibrant fabrics. The en suite bathroom is even equipped with, you guessed it, a rainforest shower. You’ll also have the option of upgrading for double hammocks, spa baths and an extra four-poster day bed, positioned on the deck so you can sleep under the stars.

And, with these UNESCO-listed views at every turn, you’ll want to get out and explore. To help, Silky Oaks puts on a full spread of complimentary excursions. Guided walks bring you into the national park’s depths, as do kayak, mountain bike and canoe trips. You can even make use of the snorkelling equipment to spot turtles and the lodge’s resident platypus. Or, hop aboard the Port Douglas shuttle to relax on the white sands of Four Mile Beach and book on to a complimentary yoga session, held by the river. If you want to splash out, there’s an excellent spa that offers a full complement of treatments.

There’s also a superb restaurant, offering a fine-dining experience in the depths of the rainforest. The chef works closely with the region’s farmers and fishermen to source fresh, seasonal ingredients, with international favourites dished up alongside crocodile and kangaroo, dressed in native seasonings. This being Australia, the wine list is also especially good – as is the craft cocktail list, served at the treehouse bar.
