Highlights

  • Built on a mountainside, the views are some of the best in Hakone, whether you’re on your private balcony or relaxing in the onsen baths
  • Speaking of which, the onsen are some of the best we’ve experienced in Japan, with private offerings in every room
  • A rare delight in Japan, this ryokan features its very own spa – an ideal antidote to a couple of days spent in Tokyo’s energy

The world of ryokans is one of hot spring soaks, fine dining and traditional sensibilities. And, at Hakone Ginyu, all of these are brought to the fore, augmented by stunning views and immaculately designed rooms that feature a delightful timber design. Hakone, despite its setting just outside of Tokyo, is a complete juxtaposition to the world’s largest city. With carpeted valleys, shrine-ringed lakes and views of shy Mt. Fuji, it’s a world away from the big-city bustle. And it’s this kind of scenery that Hakone Ginyu takes full advantage of, positioned on the slopes of the region’s forested hills. It also fully engages with Hakone’s rich onsen traditions that date back over 1,000 years. There are three separate tubs available, with the two outdoor iterations particularly enticing, offering a delightfully verdant setting.

In more detail

Traditions continue inside with authentic rooms featuring hand-carved sculptures, timber decking and low-rise furniture. There’s even a range of minimalist Japanese artwork, complemented by the clean lines of the rooms’ more contemporary furnishings. However, their standout feature is their balconies. Each features its own private deck, complete with outdoor bath – ideal for soaking up those spectacular gorge views.

The ryokan’s dining takes its notes locally too, featuring seasonal menus that make the most of regional produce. While you can expect the best in noodle dishes and wagyu beef, it’s the seafood that grabs the headline. This is high praise in an island nation famed for its fresh catches. It’s all washed down with an extensive drinks menu with the usual sakes complemented by craft cocktails and a lengthy wine list.
