Named after and run by relatives of the famous Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg, Opus XVI simply oozes elegance. Housed within a brown brick building that was once Bergen’s largest bank, it pairs grand marble columns and polished granite walls with contemporary Scandinavian design. It’s also perfectly situated for exploring the city, just a short stroll away from the harbour, the fish market and Bryggen, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hanseatic wharf. The restaurant serves delicious à la carte breakfasts and traditional West Norwegian cuisine later on, while the bar is a delightful spot for street food, craft beers, cocktails and fine wines.

In more detail

Musical heritage runs deep throughout the Opus XVI hotel, which pays homage to the legacy of the esteemed Norwegian composer and pianist, Edvard Grieg through an in-house exhibition that tells his fascinating life story. Formerly a bank, the building retains many of its original features, including marble columns and polished granite walls. It’s right in the centre of Bergen, too, with a plethora of bars and restaurants close by and the top attractions all within easy walking distance.

While the communal spaces may exude historical grandeur, the rooms here are very much modern in style. Each one comes with free Wi-Fi access, a Nespresso coffee machine, a TV with chromecast and a heated-floor bathroom with a walk-in shower and complimentary Molton Brown toiletries. Some offer views of Mount Fløyen, while the suites come with spacious living areas as well.

Start your day with a superb à la carte breakfast and, if you fancy dining in later on, you can look forward to authentic, locally sourced dishes at the on-site restaurant. For something a little more casual, head to the bar for street food, cocktails, craft beers and fine wines – or you may even be tempted to book a table for afternoon tea. Friday evenings, meanwhile, are filled with live jazz music.

You’ll also have access to a well-equipped fitness centre throughout your stay.
