The hotel is discreetly tucked away among Mediterranean scrubland on the northern coast of Vulcanello, a small islet connected to the main part of Vulcano by a narrow isthmus. The main port area and La Baia Negra (the black sand beach) is around a 20-25 minute walk away, but you can also explore the island by renting bikes, scooters or quad bikes.
Whitewashed walls, colourful majolica tiles, marble accents and black lava stone lend the rooms an authentically Sicilian aesthetic, complimented by spacious balconies and terraces offering views of the Tyrrhenian Sea or the hotel’s gardens. Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a TV and a mini bar with soft drinks come as standard, while suites offer plenty of additional space.
Exquisite dining is part and parcel of the experience here, with a choice of four restaurants showcasing the very best of Sicilian cuisine using the highest quality local produce. Two of these, Il Cappero and I Tenerumi, hold Michelin star status, with the latter also holding a Michelin green star for its outstanding commitment to sustainable practices – as exemplified by its vegetarian menu featuring vegetables sourced directly from the hotel’s gardens. For more casual dining, The Arcipelago and I Grusoni certainly hit the mark, offering everything from wood-fired pizzas to fresh fish from the Aeolian Islands. You’ve also got a couple of bars to choose from – one near the lobby and another by the pool – for delectable cocktails, fine wines and aperitivos.
When it comes to relaxation, the spa has you covered with a comprehensive selection of treatments available on request, as well as a hot pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath. There’s also a stunning, split-level outdoor pool where you can enjoy cooling off or soaking up the sunshine on the terrace while gazing out across the sea and out towards Lipari in the distance. While there’s no beach as such on-site, the hotel offers direct access to the sea from a rocky platform. As tempting as it is to spend your time at the resort itself, it’s also well worth venturing out to hike up Vulcano’s crater and to visit the black-sand beaches dotted around the island’s coastline.
