Built by a renowned Icelandic strongman and Olympian, Hotel Borg was opened in 1930. During its heyday it attracted luminaries from Marlene Dietrich to Ella Fitzgerald. A major restoration restored it to its former glory and these day it is an imposing, dignified landmark overlooking an attractive city square, Austurvollur. Its Art Deco style is carried throughout, with areas from the foyer and lobby to beautifully appointed bedrooms decked out in period style – look out too for Borg-branded silver teapots and wrestling ephemera relating to its founder’s chosen sport.
Rooms are comfortable and stylish, combining old-world elegance with modern design touches. The Art Deco theme is apparent in even the smallest details. Period black and white custom-made furniture and parquet floors are coupled with Bauhaus table lamps, glossy Macassar ebony furniture and contemporary amenities. For a special occasion secure the Tower Suite, a two-floor room with panoramic views over the city.
Enjoy delicious coffee in the Kaffibrennslan bar during the day or choose from the appetising cocktail list after dark. The main restaurant is now a branch of Jamie’s Italian, by Jamie Oliver, which retains the Art Deco-era grandeur of its predecessor.
From your central base in the heart of Reykjavik you’re just a short stroll from the Icelandic parliament and Reykjavik cathedral as well as the bustling main streets and shopping districts.
After a day out in the city exploring, stroll back to the Hotel Borg and try the spacious spa, where you can indulge in a hot tub, sauna and signature massage. You can’t beat popping a bottle of champagne on one of the beautiful balconies overlooking downtown and watching the fiery colours of an Icelandic sunset.
