Highlights

  • Distinctive and exclusive rooms – there are just six suites in total
  • A splendidly restored 19th-century villa with lovely views
  • Queenstown and its attractions are just a short stroll away

A beautifully restored 19th century villa, Hulbert House is just a stroll from central Queenstown. Within its walls though, city life seems far away. There are just six exquisite rooms, some with views of Lake Wakatipu or Skyline Hill. The rooms themselves are gorgeous to look at, with dramatic and detailed wallpaper and judiciously chosen antiques. Charming, sophisticated and cosseting, it’s a fine place to start a holiday in New Zealand.

In more detail

There are just six rooms at Hulbert House, but choosing the best is no simple task. The views from the higher rooms might tip the balance, but each and every one has been decorated in high style. Bold wallpapers are a feature, but otherwise they differ. One has a canopied bed and fabulous chandelier, another an elegant antique writing desk, another enjoys its own veranda. All feature fine linen and luxurious furnishings, down to the rich, patterned carpets. The garden is rather glorious too, with plenty of seating to relax in while enjoying the views; and the Palm Lounge is a profusion of greenery and chandeliers. Both are lovely places to enjoy the canapés and cocktails served every evening, before heading out to dinner. The proprietors are happy to reserve restaurants for supper, and there are plenty to choose from in Queenstown. The walk back is a short one, though does involve a small hill, so they will send the hotel car if preferred. Breakfast, served in the stone walled and very striking kitchen and dining area, is a feast, with freshly baked bread and pastries, free-range eggs and bacon – a perfect start to days spent exploring Queenstown’s myriad attractions.
