Overlooking the stunning fjord of the same name and looking like something from a Scandinavian folk story, Storfjord Hotel is an insider’s address hidden in the Sunnmore Alps. Billing itself as a ‘slow life hideaway’, the property is a secluded luxury stay that feels more like a home than a hotel. While there’s plenty to satisfy an adventurous spirit, slow down instead and let the days drift by in languid luxury.

In more detail

This secluded woodland retreat has a log cabin look but inside is much more contemporary and luxurious. Handcrafted with incredible attention to detail, Storfjord Hotel, with its knickknacks and antiques has the air of a private home that you’ve been invited to visit. Let your hosts work their magic and leave feeling refreshed and impossibly well looked after.

Unpack in your stylishly Scandinavian suite, admire the bespoke four-poster bed, relax in the individual sitting room and soak everything up from your private balcony.

Step outside and take in the fresh mountain air. Explore the fjord and mountain scenery on foot, by bike or as part of a cruise. You may even have seals and puffins for company. Alternatively, if you want to spoil yourselves, get airborne on a helicopter flight for an entirely different, exclusive perspective. Take in the spectacular Geirangerfjord on a private boat trip with a local sea captain or board a RIB for a thrilling tour of the waterfalls and fjord farms found here. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even kayak through the vertiginous fissures or discover the delights of wild swimming and snorkelling. Picnic shoreside afterwards. Join a food safari at an authentic fjord farm to gain insights into how food is hunted, fished and foraged and taste the seasonal berries, mushrooms, plants and herbs. Let a local family teach you traditional baking methods and enjoy the fruits of your labours.

Further afield, venture to Alesund, a beautiful small port with an eclectic vibe where you can soak up Art Nouveau architecture and Norwegian culture while sampling the best coffee in the country. Or take a high-speed RIB safari to Runde Island in search of seals and puffins.

Pre-prandial drinks can be enjoyed on the galleried landing overlooking Glomset Bay, Storfjord and the Aps, or you can snuggle up by the open fire with a book and a freshly baked homemade biscuit. In the evening, make your way to the candlelit timbered hall to take your place on the grand table, or let us arrange a more private sitting for just the two of you. An open plan kitchen shows off the skilful chef and his brigade who conjure up traditional dishes from local ingredients, belying the rural setting.
