This weeklong holiday offers the perfect introduction to Italy’s Amalfi Coast. With a full week based at a luxurious seaside hotel in Sorrento, you’ll unpack just once, dividing your time between guided exploration and out-and-out relaxation. Indeed, your adventure begins with a day in the company of a private driver-guide, who’ll be on hand to show you all the best spots between the towns of Amalfi and Ravello. Then, after a fascinating day spent exploring the region’s Roman treasures, you’ll head by hydrofoil for a small-group tour of glamorous Capri. Lastly, wrap things up with three free days, mixing the likes of spa treatments and refreshing swims from your hotel’s private bathing platform with ambling hikes amongst pretty lemon groves and the chance to taste your way through the Amalfi Coast’s famed local produce.

Day 1

Arrive in Sorrento

With UK airport lounge access included before your flight, you’ll arrive in Naples fully rested. Of course, we’ll arrange a private transfer to meet you and bring to Sorrento and your luxury hotel. Perched on a cliff top and with sweeping views of the sea and Mt. Vesuvius’s iconic cone, it’s a wonderful and luxurious base for your weeklong stay. Spend the rest of the day enjoying your new surroundings, perhaps with a massage or a refreshing swim in the hotel pool. There’s even a bathing platform, reached by private lift, perfect for a dip in the sea.

Day 2

Amalfi explorations

Spend today exploring the stunning Amalfi Coast, one of Italy’s most picturesque regions. While having a private driver will afford you the flexibility to explore at your own pace, don’t miss out on a stop at Amalfi and its multi-coloured jumble of historic houses, tumbling towards its azure, beach-framed waters. Its cathedral is particularly impressive. There’s also Ravello, a town rich with musical heritage whose idyllic Villa Rufolo gardens inspired the works of a certain Richard Wagner.

Day 3

Roman heritage in Pompeii, Herculaneum or Stabiae

Today you’ll discover the region’s Roman heritage, much of which was immaculately preserved under a sea of ash from the 1st-century eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. And, while Pompeii’s famed amphitheatres, giant tombs and frescoed houses take the plaudits, Herculaneum’s mosaicked baths and Stabiae’s ridge-top villas showcase a lesser-known but no less fascinating insight.

Whichever you choose, your expert private guide will be on hand to unlock its secrets as you wander ancient streets, dipping in and out of thousand-year-old shops and immaculately detailed residences.

Day 4

A day on Capri

After breakfast, make the most of your hotel’s shuttle as you head for the harbour to catch the hydrofoil to enjoy a small group tour of nearby Capri. A favourite among holidaying Roman emperors, this stunning island is home to everything from great ruined villas to colossal sculptures, hidden among its cliff-framed coast and lush, mountainous interior. As you explore, keep an eye out for 700-year-old monasteries and 17th-century marbled churches set to against a backdrop of glorious island views.

Days 5 – 7

Sorrento relaxation

End your trip with three days to relax and explore Sorrento. With your hotel just a short walk from the 14th-century San Francesco Cloisters and the palm-tree-lined Piazza Sant'Antonino, you’ll be perfectly poised to stroll the city’s cobbled streets. While away happy afternoons in pavement-side cafés, marvelling at its cathedral’s impressively gilded frescoes or simply relaxing on one of the nearby golden-sands beaches.

There’s also an abundance of walking trails to explore, some hugging the coast and others winding amidst scented lemon and olive groves populated with Mediterranean scrub. Perhaps book an optional tour for the chance to enjoy guided tastings of local products, from Limoncello to Mozzarella.

About the itinerary

"Spectacular and rich in Italian culture and history, Italy's Amalfi Coast is one of Europe's true travel icons. I've put together this itinerary as a perfect introduction to the region, with day trips designed to showcase the best of its many highlights. Of course, you'll want to relax, too, so we've also worked in a few days off to take things easy in and around one of my favourite Sorrento hotels."
