Set among 25 acres of peaceful gardens, it is now a luxury hotel where guests can enjoy the perfect balance between nearby Florence's culture and the serenity of rural Tuscany. Despite its renovation back in the early 1950s, its centuries-old history lives on, with characterful Renaissance architecture and traditionally Florentine decor a feature throughout the hotel. In more detail

Spread across five classical Tuscan buildings, the hotel's 51 luxury rooms and suites are all unique. Rooms in the Noble Villa building are furnished in typical Florentine style with local fabrics, antiques, carpeting and four-poster beds dressed with Renaissance-style canopies. Elsewhere, the Villino and Mulino annexes feature lighter, more contemporary décor, while the four suites in the recently renovated Casa Colonica maintain the same decorative Renaissance style but with a more luxe-contemporary farmhouse feel. Finally, in the Limonaia building, rooms have similar style but feature either private gardens or balconies overlooking the stunning River Arno.

Villa la Massa spoils guests with two delightful dining options. The lovely riverside restaurant Il Verrocchio – with it's scenic terrace overlooking the River Arno and the spellbinding backdrop of the Tuscan hills – is the perfect choice if you're looking to dine with a view. It serving a generous buffet of Tuscan specialities for breakfast, including traditional focaccias, home-baked cakes, freshly-pressed seasonal juices as well as an array of continental favourites. In the evenings, Chef Stefano Ballarino serves a traditional Italian dinner menu with contemporary flourishes, centring on local produce and the estate's organic extra-virgin olive oil. Look out for specialities such as the wild boar-stuffed ravioli. The poolside L’Oliveto – located in the renovated stone barn – invites guests for a lazy lunch. With a laidback, cosy atmosphere and a charming outdoor patio, it serves salads, carpacci, pastas, pizzas and international classics. During the warm summer evenings, the restaurant turns into a traditional Tuscan trattoria where you can try the likes of Bistecca alla Fiorentina and zuccotto.

For aperitifs and signature cocktails, the Bar Mediceo is a glamorous choice. Perhaps try the “Like a Virgin” cocktail, dedicated to Madonna, a famous guest of the hotel. And, if you're looking to make a day of it, the Villa la Massa Wine Cellar is situated beneath Il Verrocchio restaurant and dates back to the fifteenth century. Here, private tastings of vintages from Tuscany as well as top wines from elsewhere in Italy can be arranged. For daytime activities, Villa la Massa features tennis courts and bicycles for guests to explore the surroundings. You'll also find a gym, a spa for pampering, a gorgeous pool and plenty of shaded green lawns for lounging and sun beds. A complimentary shuttle service operates between the hotel and the famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence, giving guests the perfect balance for combining culture and relaxation.
