In more detail

Routes

From the east-meets-west wonders of Istanbul to the castles of Transylvania and the Alpine splendours of Innsbruck, the Golden Eagle Danube Express’ routes are as fascinating as they are imaginative. Indeed, some routes even cross over sea between Sicily and the Italian main land on what is among the world’s only ‘train ferries’. And, while you’ll be invited to explore such city greats as Milan, Venice and Budapest, you’ll have the chance to step off the beaten track, too, taking in the likes of picturesque Lake Bled, the Greek city of Thessaloniki and Sinaia in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. Speak to our specialists about all the routes available.

Cabins & suites

With private en-suite facilities, the train’s new Superior Deluxe Cabins offer an indulgent space to rival some of the finest on-the-rails suites in Europe. Each one offers comfortable daytime seating, including a full-length sofa and two extra leather-back chairs along with a huge picture window for taking in the view. Then, in the evening, it’s all transformed into a luxury bedroom, complete with king-size bed. There’s also plenty of storage, individually controlled air conditioning, dimmable lighting and even a few mod-cons, including in-cabin WiFi.

Also on board, the slightly smaller Deluxe Cabins – also en suite – offer plenty of wood-panelled elegance while at the entry level, Heritage Cabins are small but perfectly formed, with bunk beds converted from a comfortable couch and shared facilities, a toilet at one end of the carriage and a shower at the other.

Dining

The train’s restaurant cars are delightful venues for indulging in first-class dining. Enjoy delicious breakfasts – fruits, cereals, cold plates, a sumptuous buffet spread and hot à la carte options – and gourmet lunches and dinners, inspired by the train’s route. It’s all complemented by a superb wine list and a selection of soft drinks and beers. What’s more, the dress code is informal, so expect a relaxed and convivial atmosphere throughout.

Relaxation

As well as the chance to take in so many incredible destinations, one of the real joys of train travel is the opportunity to relax on board. And, aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express, it’s the Bar Lounge Car where guests can unwind with a drink, a good book or a game of cards, or simply enjoy the views in the company of others. It’s also where the Tour Manager organises the programme of activities, detailing departure and arrival times, imparting those all-important weather forecasts and providing information for the following days excursions. Then, in the evening, there’s the chance to relax to the sounds of the resident pianist with the bar staying open until the last person heads for bed.
