First built in the late 19th century for the World Exhibition, this hotel truly deserves its heritage listing. In more detail

Found right on Vienna’s Ring Boulevard, the setting is equally privileged. Once given over to high medieval walls, today this grand road is plied by trams and is host to a delightful café scene. Be sure to also turn out to take in the Austrian capital’s great sights, ranging from mighty palaces to cathedrals and concert halls.

Back at base, things take on a more modernist outlook, with the hotel’s rooms resplendent in bold colours, leather headboards and chic furnishing. There’s also plenty of welcome little touches, like Nespresso coffee machines and iPad-controlled entertainment systems. If you’re looking for something extra special, consider upgrading for everything from pillow menus and deep bathtubs to balcony views of the Ring Boulevard. The Presidential Suite is a special highlight for its piano, planted wall and luxurious marble bathroom.

But, the luxuries continue throughout the hotel. The spa is the obvious highlight, featuring a pool, gym, sauna and collection of massage rooms. There’s also a cigar lounge, complemented by a pair of delightful bars where craft cocktails are matched with delicate bites. For something more substantial, head to Die Kueche Wien for Austrian steaks or Edvard for Michelin-starred Mediterranean dining.
