Close to Windhoek’s bustling barbeque centre, but in entirely peaceful and soothing surrounds on the outskirts, the Olive Grove Guesthouse is quirkily stylish. Rooms, more or less poured cement lit up by Moroccan lanterns and colourful details, are as comfortable as they are visually arresting, with plush mattresses and fine linen, and a lovely veranda. A flickering fireplace and cosy chairs line the lounge, from where guests can watch the chefs prepare dinner in the open-plan kitchen. There’s an outside lounge too, to make the most of that sunshine, and the fragrant garden features a refreshing plunge pool. The vibe here is a friendly one, and the driver or a guesthouse guide will happily take guests into town for shopping or sightseeing. On return, there is an extensive and excellent South African wine list to enjoy. Guests rave about the breakfasts here, designed to set you up for journeys into the surreal, wide and extraordinary wilds of Namibia.
